Country Information

Click on the Country Information link (in the left hand margin) which will take you to a world map indicating the various continents in which the LWF operates programs and projects.  Click on a continent, or choose from available continents in the menu, then click on a country of your choice from either the map or the menu.

For the country that you have chosen you will see a variety of external links with detailed information regarding the country.  For example:

Encyclopedia Britannica The world's most comprehensive source of information including history and current geographical indicators
World Fact Book Up-to-date economic, political and social data
News Live news updates from local and international news services
Weather Current weather reports
Travel Travel, health and visa requirements for visitors
World Currencies Daily currency rates for the major world currencies
Other Links Relief Web - the most comprehensive source of data available including news services, country data, UN links and other important information.

You also have access to a clickable colour map of the country you have chosen which expands to full size when clicked on.  This map can be printed or saved locally for inclusion in your own documentation and reports.  The flag of the country is also shown.

MaRS Databases

The Mars web site currently contains 5 databases all of which are password-protected.  In order to access these databases you must be registered with Lutheran World Federation in Geneva, Switzerland as an authorised user. Once authorised you will be provided with a user ID and a password. Please contact plt@lutheranworld.org for accreditation.

Documents This is a database of documentation and reports available for programs and projects operated by the LWF.  These documents have either been received from project holders or LWF Field Offices or have been generated in Geneva HQ. The documents cover areas such as Statement of Needs (SON),  Planning and Monitoring System (PMS), DMD Church Profiles, DWS Monthly Reports etc.  These documents, or their contents, may be used by agencies to report to their respective back donors. This database is updated once the documents have been reviewed by the appropriate Geneva desk and entered into the database.
Finances A database extracted from the LWF Geneva NCR financial accounting computer system.  It records donor income towards programs and projects and, in the case of DMD and other LWF departments, cash transfers to the project holders.  In the case of DWS, expenditures are recorded by the respective LWF Field Office and reported to LWF Geneva.  These amounts are then recorded as expenditures.  The Financial Database is updated every morning at 07:00 CET.
Images LWF Field Offices have all been equipped with Sony digital cameras.  Images are transmitted as email attachments to LWF Geneva HQ and entered into an image database by the Department for Communication Services. Other images are scanned into a digital format in geneva and are included in the database.  All images can be viewed on screen, printed or downloaded for inclusion in reports.
Contacts A comprehensive list of LWF addresses and contacts.  This database is maintained by LWF departmental personnel who record any new contacts made with an external source in a database.  The database contains names, addresses, telephone/fax numbers and email addresses.  It is a multiple choice database.
Resolutions This database records important resolutions and items of interest extracted from agendas, proceedings and minutes of LWF Assemblies, Councils, Commissions, Executive Committees and Cabinet Meetings dating back to 1945. It is a multiple choice database.
Work Areas

One of the most important potential uses of MaRS is the Work Area concept. These are special areas within MaRS where groups of persons - whether they be from LWF Staff, Supporting Agencies or LWF Member Churches - can meet, access specific documentation relating to their 'area of work' or discuss issues of common concern.

One obvious benefit is a work area specifically for LWF Field Office Finance Staff where current financial data can be placed in the work area by LWF Geneva, on a daily basis, and then downloaded by Finance Officers when required.  Already Donor Income, LWF Exchange Rates, Current Accounts and specific File Directories are available for download. This method of exchanging data offers

Work Areas also contain MaRS Discussion Forums where registered users can exchanged views on specific topics of interest or concern such as the recently inaugurated Environmental Guidelines Discussion Forum or the Theology and Studies - Church and Social Issues Discussion Forum.

The LWF acts on behalf of its member churches in areas of common interest such as ecumenical relations, theology, humanitarian assistance, human rights, communication, and the various aspects of mission and development work
